Savta on a Segway

That's my son, the one who works in Ir David. Some days he takes folks around the digs and into the Shiloah. But today he was leading the Segway tour. You get a tutorial on how to operate the vehicle and then you go from the Peace Forest just off Derekh Hebron over to the Sherover Promenade, up to the Haas Promenade and then over to the Goldman Promenade. The sun shone and the fabulous spring landscaping of those promenades add to Jerusalem's splendor. It's all spread out before you and there is so much history to discuss.

At the Haas Promenade there was a school group telling the story of Jerusalem in song, dance and prose. It was made to order. As we passed a young girl was telling about the 19 years that the city was divided. As we moved away she was recounting the liberation 41 years ago and then they played Naomi Shemer's Yerusahlayim Shel Zahav.

I enjoyed rolling along and looking out over Jerusalem with my son. For me, it was a day for reflecting and counting my blessings. How could it already be 41 years (minus about 6 weeks) that I have been here in Israel? I am proud of what Israel has done in Jerusalem and happy that Jerusalem remains united and the capital of Israel. I hope we have the strength and wisdom to keep it that way. I heard a lovely 'vort' that Jerusalem was not given to any of the tribes (it's on the border of Judah and Binyamin) and because it doesn't belong specifically to anyone it belongs to us all of us. Well, that means it's everyone's responsibility to preserve our rights in Jerusalem and no one can give it away on his own. (You know who I mean.)

It's a little pricey (and only folks over 18 can ride the Segway) but it is an exciting adventure and you might learn a little history too!

Wow! What fun!!
You look so young.
We're only here almost 38 years. Do you remember when we were all Yerushalmim? Now we hardly see each other.

This is a great blog gem!! I had a wonderful time riding a segway through Jerusalem. It took a bit to get used to the movement, but after a while, I got the hang of it. I can't wait to get back there.
Quite a coincidence that I came by here from the blog gems and found you doing something I enjoyed so much as well :)

Lovely to learn that Jerusalem belongs to everyone - wish that could be the case everywhere. Over from Blog Gems and it's great to find blogs like this that I would never come across otherwise :)
